Description | This safe manufactured by the Manganese Steel Safe Company won first prize at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904. Edward Gardner Lewis purchased it for the People's United States Bank. The safe was never installed, but it was housed on the Lewis Publishing Company premises until 1912. A photograph of the safe as it appeared at the World's Fair appeared in "The Siege of University City," by Sidney Morse. In this photograph, taken on the lot east of the Woman's Magazine Building, most of the decorative metal work has been removed. |
