Description | This photograph taken about 1906 shows two houses in University Heights #1 under construction. Both houses were designed by Herbert C. Chivers, architect for the Woman's Magazine Building, and an associate of Edward Gardner Lewis. The house on the right is at 6965 Princeton Avenue and matches the design for the "Mount Jewell Residence" in Chivers' house plan catalogue "Artistic Homes," published in 1910. Francis V. Putnam, a Lewis associate, was the first owner. The house on the left is at 6975 Cornell Avenue and matches the design for the "Manston Residence" in Artistic Homes. Mabel Lewis' sisters, Mrs. Charles Breyman and Mrs. Robert Crabb, were early residents. In this photograph, both houses are almost complete but construction materials are still visible in the yards. |
