Date.Digital | 2003-04-27 | Date.Original | c. 1910 | Description | The Lewises' house was the first house built in University Heights #1. When the subdivision was being laid out, Lewis reportedly purchased the least desirable piece of property in order to show what could be done. He turned the hilly, swampy yard into a lovely garden with ornamental bridges and decorative seating areas. Mabel Lewis' nieces, Flora Breyman (on the right) and Rose Breyman (on the left) had lived with the Lewises for several years. The girls were joined in the garden for this photograph by two of the Lewises' dogs. The dog on the right is Marley. The Italian Renaissance Revival mansion that belonged to Jackson Johnson is at the top of the hill. | Source | Photograph, upper left corner torn, other corners bent, horizontal crease through center, tear upper right, staining, 9.68" by 7.75" | Subject | University City (Mo.)--Pictorial Works | Subject | University Heights #1 Subdivision (University City, Mo.) | Subject | Breyman, Flora | Subject | Breyman, Rose | Subject.Keyword | Vintage clothing | Subject.Keyword | Houses--Missouri--University City | Subject.Keyword | Dogs | Title | Mabel Lewis' nieces in the garden southwest of the Lewises' house in University Heights #1 |
