Description | In 1903, Edward Gardner Lewis hired architect Herbert C. Chivers to design the new headquarters for the Lewis Publishing Company. He designed the building using a mix of styles. In this photograph taken in the winter of 1903-1904, the exterior walls for the headquarters building, known more familiarly as the Woman's Magazine Building, are complete up through the fifth floor. The first floor is constructed of stone and upper stories of brickwork decorated with spiraling garlands and classic egg and dart moldings. Framing for the arched windows around the fifth floor is in place. The Press Annex on the left is a much more reserved and functional design. |
